Would seem likely this is the wagon thought to be 041999? See other comments on 041998 and 041999 pages.

This is almost certainly the same wagon as the blue one photographed at Derby on 20.3.04 (and is definitely not the one now at Peak Rail) - the axles boxes are the same and the lower connecting rod appears to have a kink in it towards the front end. However, this doesn't really get us anywhere as we can't be certain that the 2004 photo is of 041999.

Unless we have one or more definite photos of 041515, 041516 or 041999 then I think all we can say with any level of certainty is that the 'SSL' wagon at Peak Rail and the 'VLU' wagon, which is assumed to be still at Derby, are probably two of these three. Different diagrams for the three wagons are involved but I don't think the differences in the diagrams are sufficient to narrow it down any further.

However, as there are no sightings of 041515, if I was a gambler then I would suggest that the two wagons 'VLU' and 'SSL' are 041516 and 041999. Also, given that 041999 was seen carrying a number on 2.2.12 and this number cannot be seen on the 2004 photo, then I would suggest that the 'VLU' wagon is not 041999. So that makes the one at Peak Rail 041999 and the one still at Derby 041516! There, cracked it! Feel free to shoot my theory to bits.

Thanks Tim but this has confused me a little because at the start you say this is 041999 and that's not the Peak Rail one... but then at the end say the Peak Rail one is 041999! ;)

I think you mean 041999 "VLU" is still at Derby and what we think might likely be 041516 "SSL" is at Peak Rail?

I've shuffled things around a bit on the various pages to reflect the above until any more evidence arises!

VLU (09) Stock was delivered between 2009 and 2011; Sub-Surface Lines trains (S8 followed by S7) between 2009 and 2016, which provides date ranges that these will have been used, and which may either help or further confuse.

Sorry Ben, I probably haven't worded it very well and even I am not 100% certain that I haven't contradicted myself somewhere.

In summary, I don't think the picture from 20.3.04 is of 041999, I think it is of 041516 (head above parapet time again). This is the one that is labelled 'VLU' and is still at Derby. Perhaps.

041999 is the one labelled 'SSL' and is at Peak Rail. Perhaps.

Although I think it is a reasonable gamble to suggest that the two wagons are 041516 and 041999, my guess as to which is which is purely based on the flimsy evidence of the number of 041999 being seen on 2.2.12 and not being visible on the earlier picture from 20.3.04 (it may be numbered on the other side). Therefore, I have no complaints with the two wagons being identified either way around, with perhaps a warning that it could be the other. It is a real shame that we haven't got any pictures of either 041516 or 041999 when they still had their numbers on.

Given that 041999 was from a different lot to 041516 (and 041515), and to a different diagram, I will take it upon myself to have a closer look at wagons from the same lots whenever I can (there aren't that many left) to try and identify any smoking gun differences.

There are some BR Conflat wagon photos on Paul Bartlett's wagon website if these are of any use in identifying any minor Lot Number differences.
