4 February 2012 - Michael John Daubney
A conflat bearing this number -041999- (in rather large numerals & partly painted green) was observed through the boundary fence alongside Litchurch Lane on 2-2-12 together with a Freightliner flat which seemed to be "plated" 601034. Could anyone confirm this please or give any further information.
5 February 2012 - Paul Cheesemore
Have got 041998 ( ex ADB530672) as going to Litchurch Lane - both this and 041999 are ex BREL York. I did see a F/liner flat there on the 23/11/08 marked up "WGN No.2" - thought this may have been 602587 but this sighting has thrown up a spanner
16 December 2012 - Robert Hewison
2 Freightliner flats seen yesterday 15/12/12. 601034 I think and 601612 were seen yesterday. No sign of 041999, but def 041998 was there on top of an UID wagon

Another interesting recent find at Derby - I believe this is a Conflat L which could make it 041999 or 041515 (no sightings) or 041516 (last seen Derby 2005.) Again any more info appreciated.

'VLU' would make it a match for Victoria Line Underground stock.

Ah interesting Andy, thanks for making that clear cheers..

Could it possibly be this at Worksop?

I don't *think* so, although the two vehicles are very nearly identical, there's a couple of things that tell me they're not the same wagon. The axlebox covers (or that area) are yellow on this wagon, and might be a slightly different type, although it is hard to tell. Secondly, the extra square of bodywork (was it formerly a paper holder?) in the left-hand indent is in the centre of this wagon, on the wagon at Worksop, this square is right on the far left of the indent. There is also a small dent/horizontal scrape in the middle of the second panel on the wagon in this photo. This does not appear to be present on the Worksop wagon.

I've just come across this photo so added it for reference. On same day it was almost immediately adjacent to very similar 041998 (pic also now uploaded here.) Of course I can't say for certain this is 041999 but seems likely?

Would seem likely this is the wagon thought to be 041999? See other comments on 041998 and 041999 pages.

Comparing this with the photo of 041999, I believe this to be 041999 and have added the sighting. It was not seen today at the event by myself..

Again, this is 041999 same as my photo titled 'Unknown'

Are any of the Conflat wagons still at Litchurch Lane Works 'Conflat L' type? I saw two Conflats from London Road in 2025 but they were moved out of sight before the Rail 200 event. I didn't take a photo at the time so can't say if they are 'Conflat A' or 'Conflat L' type.
4 May 2026 - Ben Williams
Well this is interesting Brian as I didn't realise there were potentially any Conflats still left at Litchurch Lane! Other than the frame of 041998.
I see the 2012 comment above says 041999 was partly green and was clearly numbered at that time. I think that would suggest the photo above is 041999 as it matches livery of 041998 and they were presumably painted like this at York as a pair before moving to Derby. 041281 probably moved from York at the same time?
I'm now not so sure that the wagon that went to Worksop (and has now been found at Peak Rail) is 041999 - especially if there are two more remaining at Derby that were not visible during the open day last year.
024674 was allocated to Derby but is a Conflat A. No sightings since 1993.
041515 was allocated to Derby and is a Conflat L. No sightings at all here. This is a possibility for the Peak Rail wagon.
041516 was allocated to Derby and is a Conflat L. No sightings since 2005. This is a possibility for the Peak Rail wagon.
If anyone has any photos of these three above it would be very useful!
5 May 2026 - Brian Cuttell
The two Conflats looked in good condition and were parked next to 024178 on a short siding in front of the buildings. I last saw them on 30/3/25 and all three vehicles had been moved by early August in preparation for the Rail 200 event.

Just to try and confuse matters further, if that's possible, I have two comments:
1. Where is B710236 nowadays? It hasn't been seen at Central Rivers for many years so is it back at Derby Litchurch Lane? Looking at Google Earth for 13.8.22 there is a wagon here that looks suspiciously like a photo that I have of B710236 (I cannot recall where I got the photo from so I can't upload it due to possible copyright issues).
2. There is a picture on this website at Derby Litchurch Lane taken on 27.1.17 by Greg Hartle of a Conflat L, similar to supposedly 041999 but labelled 'VLU', which is almost certainly a different wagon to 041999 when comparing it to the recent photos taken at Peak Rail. Where is this wagon now?

...and this is another shot of the mystery "VLU" Conflat L...

This is almost certainly the same wagon as the blue one photographed at Derby on 20.3.04 (and is definitely not the one now at Peak Rail) - the axles boxes are the same and the lower connecting rod appears to have a kink in it towards the front end. However, this doesn't really get us anywhere as we can't be certain that the 2004 photo is of 041999.
Unless we have one or more definite photos of 041515, 041516 or 041999 then I think all we can say with any level of certainty is that the 'SSL' wagon at Peak Rail and the 'VLU' wagon, which is assumed to be still at Derby, are probably two of these three. Different diagrams for the three wagons are involved but I don't think the differences in the diagrams are sufficient to narrow it down any further.
However, as there are no sightings of 041515, if I was a gambler then I would suggest that the two wagons 'VLU' and 'SSL' are 041516 and 041999. Also, given that 041999 was seen carrying a number on 2.2.12 and this number cannot be seen on the 2004 photo, then I would suggest that the 'VLU' wagon is not 041999. So that makes the one at Peak Rail 041999 and the one still at Derby 041516! There, cracked it! Feel free to shoot my theory to bits.

Thanks Tim but this has confused me a little because at the start you say this is 041999 and that's not the Peak Rail one... but then at the end say the Peak Rail one is 041999! ;)
I think you mean 041999 "VLU" is still at Derby and what we think might likely be 041516 "SSL" is at Peak Rail?
I've shuffled things around a bit on the various pages to reflect the above until any more evidence arises!

VLU (09) Stock was delivered between 2009 and 2011; Sub-Surface Lines trains (S8 followed by S7) between 2009 and 2016, which provides date ranges that these will have been used, and which may either help or further confuse.

Sorry Ben, I probably haven't worded it very well and even I am not 100% certain that I haven't contradicted myself somewhere.
In summary, I don't think the picture from 20.3.04 is of 041999, I think it is of 041516 (head above parapet time again). This is the one that is labelled 'VLU' and is still at Derby. Perhaps.
041999 is the one labelled 'SSL' and is at Peak Rail. Perhaps.
Although I think it is a reasonable gamble to suggest that the two wagons are 041516 and 041999, my guess as to which is which is purely based on the flimsy evidence of the number of 041999 being seen on 2.2.12 and not being visible on the earlier picture from 20.3.04 (it may be numbered on the other side). Therefore, I have no complaints with the two wagons being identified either way around, with perhaps a warning that it could be the other. It is a real shame that we haven't got any pictures of either 041516 or 041999 when they still had their numbers on.
Given that 041999 was from a different lot to 041516 (and 041515), and to a different diagram, I will take it upon myself to have a closer look at wagons from the same lots whenever I can (there aren't that many left) to try and identify any smoking gun differences.

There are some BR Conflat wagon photos on Paul Bartlett's wagon website if these are of any use in identifying any minor Lot Number differences.
