    I don't know what the underframe is here with the remains of 041998 on top. Anyone any thoughts?

    The bottom wagon has half of a plate on it - "LMS ". Annoyingly the number half is broken off.

    Looks like an LMS 'Tube' underframe, M49xxxx series.

    Hopefully, someone will have managed to identify it at one of the works open days back in the 1970s & 1980s. I saw a wagon u/f converted to a match wagon for single buffer stock here on 16/8/92 & 29/5/94 which was presumably this wagon. No number visible on it even back in those days.

    Yes... I'm also now wondering why this was placed on top of this wagon - looks like it has been done for a specific purpose? Propped up with those timbers. Or just adding more weight?

    I've just looked back through my old notebooks and found a sighting of LMS wagon u/f M49742x at Litchurch Lane Works on 26/8/90 which seems to fit the bill. The unidentified last digit may have been a '9'.

    The disposals of M497420 to M497428 all took place in the 1960's; M497420 cond 5671 25/65-0 disposal 4200 15/66-0; M497421 cond 6073 24/63-0 disposal 6073 24/63-4; M497422 cond 6314 26/63-0 disposal 5666 26/63-5; M497423 cond 4200 27/64-0 disposal 4200 27/64-5; M497424 cond 2412 27/64-0 disposal 2412 27/64-5; M497425 cond 6003 15/64-0 disposal 6003 15/64-4; M497426 cond 6073 13/64-0 disposal 6073 13/64-4; M497427 cond 5459 12/66-0 disposal 5459 12/66-4; M497428 cond 6073 23/63-0 disposal 6073 24/63-4. The disposal of M497429 officially at least was cond 2001 13/75-0 disposal 2001 08/76-5 but presumably retained for further use.

    Hello Brian, yes location code 2001 is Derby Litchurch Lane Works, prior to Tops codes being established from March 1977.
