What is that in the foreground then, a bogie with a brake cylinder built into it ? not seen one like that before.

    I think it's bogie from a DMU.

Going back to the main subject (DW139). When I worked for London Transport Permanent Way Design Office between 1977 and 1983, I used to look after our two portable Hallade Track Recorders and annually they went to Swindon for servicing followed by a run in DW139 which calibrated them. I remember having a thrill-seeking ride between Paddington & Swindon in this poor thing and was the only time I felt (but was not) motion sick in a train!!!

On the subject of bogies you will notice that DW139 has had its original GWR type replaced with British Rail B4 type - to give a better ride!

The only other BR Track Recording / Testing Coach ( LMS1924 vintage) No. DM395223 is still on its original 1924 kitchen car bogies and is preserved by the LMSCA at Rowsley on Peak Rail.
