  If anyone can tell me what the contraption on the front actually does I would be glad to know! It looks as though it extends outwards and possibly upwards as well? Another detail photo of this front end will appear on the site soon...

  I think it is a little inspection trolley that runs a few yards in front of the main machine, and is attached by wire. The "outwards and upwards" bit I assume is for getting the trolley onto the track. I'm sure someone can elaborate!

  The 'Satellite trolley' does indeed lift on to the track. It is not connected to the machine by wire. It has a laser cannon mounted within it that shoots a laser 'chord' to a reciever on the main emsat machine. The laser is a long chord up to 300m long which is then used to measure the track to create a measuring run for a Tamper. High tech stuff indeed!
