Hi. Happy memories for me. I was one of the Driver Instructors at Victoria Eastern depot who used to drive this unit all over the South Eastern and I also strayed onto the Central Division for a week with a Pilotman provided whilst over the 'Central side' as we knew it. It was not only used for drivers route learning but was also hired by Railtrack to check Sandite Sites to see whether they had to be lengthened, or new ones added. Folige would also be checked out to see if tree cutting had to be arranged where they were deemed to be overgrown. A video camera on a tripod would be placed inside the windscreen in the centre of the driving cab and record the whole route. A person would take notes and talk into the microphone of the camera and this would be played back when they returned to the Railtrack offices. One good thing was that we used to get free food and soft drinks on board provided by Railtrack so we were always in for a good feast! We also had the other unit 931002, but 931001seemed to be the better unit. Thank you for a great website. David Deadman . Driver Instructor Victoria (South Eastern).

Further to my comments above, it seems that whilst was writing it, I was having a senior moment! In fact I got the two route learning saloons the wrong way around. 931002 was the better unit of the two saloons.

Thanks David for your notes - always interesting to get insider stories from people who worked with these departmental vehicles...
