  These were converted during 1978-80 from redundant Class 501 EMU cars to provide power for engineering trains involved with electrification projects in the London, Liverpool and Glasgow areas. Batteries were housed in the former seating areas.

  I was surprised to find recently in an old Railway Magazine a photo of the first one of these to be converted as early as 1974/5, (will try to find exact date), these Battery locos were generally unlisted until the late 1970s. Does anyone know if a pair ever reached Glasgow as some published allocation list?
