  These ETHELs were introduced having been converted from redundant Class 25/3s to enable ETH rolling stock to operate on the northern sections of the Scottish Region where ETH fitted locomotives were barred. The traction equipment was isolated or removed and these units were coupled between the locomotive and the stock. I believe they were also later used across the network on railtours when a non-ETH locomotive was used.
