    De-icing unit 015 (Ex. S96) converted from 4-SUB set 4334, Driving Motor S 8433, built 1925 to dia. 670. To Departmental service 24-9-60, withdrawn 27-10-79.

    What are the protrusions on the windows? Could they be some sort of crude ventilation?

    Believe it or not, they are periscopes! Each coach has these on either side, the operators (there are two per. coach), sit on outward facing seats and can view the position of the conductor rail (it often alternates from one side of the track to the other, of course) and also to see the condition of the con rail as regards ice build-up. He is able to adjust the control valves accordingly, which deliver the de-icing fluid to the third rail.

    This unit comprised of DS 70096 and DS 70097. The set was finally broken up at Bird's scrapyard at Long Marston during April 1980.
