The number of this van isn't yet 100% certain as I think the number series is wrong. Dave tells me "696283" is stencilled on the underframe! No plate is visible though unfortunately. At one point it was thought that it could be 041881 but this is also unconfirmed. If anyone knows the real ID of this van please let me know!

Depot buildings nearby are currently being demolished so unless a certain person nearby can get in quick (!) it may be the end for this van...

We're still unclear what happened to the tank in the background 042196 - assumed removed and scrapped by a local dealer during 2007?

...apparently this is the right type to be 041881 and this odd painted number may be completely throwing a spanner in the works unnecessarily! If anyone can confirm or saw it in its 041881 days that would be great, thanks.

None of the local scrap dealers have any knowledge of dealing with a tank wagon, so there is the possibility either TMA processed it on site, or that it was removed complete...

This body has now been rescued and is now safe at Longhoughton. An interesting development is that a partial number has been found on the far side - "xxx831" which to me sounds remarkably close to 041881 - we await more details!

Yup, we couldn't save the depot buildings! so we decided to save what we could and this van was legitimately aquired by one of Northumbria Rail's staff who lives nearby. It is currently sitting on a flat wagon at Longhoughton and work will be undertaken soon to repair the minor damage. It certainly looks like a vanwide so 041881 is starting to look a possibility...

041836 formerly B756006 was also observed at Blyth by me in 1983 and Roger Butcher in 1986, no disposal known, but according to official records had planked sides and cupboard doors so probably not this but another annoyingly 'similar' number.

One of our lads took some photos of the underframe yesterday and it is now looking like I jotted the number down wrong back in 2003 - it actually looks like 369628 but this still doesn't seem to tally with anything... Any ideas?

Could it be 769628 as in B769628 a diagram 1/213 British Rail 12t Ventilated Van Lot 2735 and built at British Rail Faverdale Works between 3/1957-4/1958?

Sadly not - I've been told

"The ex Blyth one is design 1/217 - all this design were in the B 78xxxx range.

Looks like the only way to id this is to locate the punched number on the underframe."

Are you sure the 'partial number' you found isn't B7831xx? That would be right for a 'Vanwide'. Incidentally, these had the numbers on the doors rather than the body, if that helps (it was so the sliding door didn't hide the number).

We have two 'Vanwides' on the GCR but I totally failed to find any numbers stamped on the underframes of either of them - fortunately the IDs are known though.

I've now seen another photo of the painted number and it looks like this:

R x36962 S or 5 at the end. The 3 is a bit sketchy too! Could it be 786962?

    I've just found this message

    http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/Midland_wagons/message/6177

which refers to the old burnt out brake van that used to be here as 954510...?

Don't think so Ben - without having my books handy I can't be certain but I think B786xxx would be a diagram 1/224 which is a plywood van of the 'normal' variety i.e. with hinged doors (essentially 1/224 was like 1/213 but with longer buffers). The series then went off into the various Ferry Vans, I think!

yes Charlie has since confirmed this number was a 20t ferry van! Ah well...

Could this wagon be a 230xxx VEA van body? Weren't they rebuilt from diagram 1/217 vanwides?
