It was built for the LMS in 1938. As far as I know, it was purpose built rather than converted.

One of three vehicles built in 1938 as a Mobile Test Unit. 45054+45055 were the other two, all withdrawn 1976, 45054/55 were sent to Cashmores, Great Bridge for scrap. Although obviously coaching stock, they were ordered to a freight stock diagram, like BRs 9995XX observation saloons.

No. It is still in the same position outdoors and no work has been carried out on it in the last 7 years at least...

the current state of this unit is SHOCKING, the body has almost completely gone now, and the interior is completely open to the elements..

Yes it is shocking. It was riddled with asbestos which has since been stripped and now awaits transport to another heritage railway with plans for it.
