977207 & 977208
24 May 2005 - Ben Williams
A rather complicated story regarding this unit number which initially led to some confusion! Simon tells me:
"This would be the original unit that carried that set number, i.e. the M&EE Tractor Unit formed of 977207 and 977208. This was an ex HAP, coach nearest the camera is 977208.
As for 977296, this was originally part of M&EE Tractor Unit 050 with 977297. Around 1993, Strawberry Hill did a reform of several sets, I believe to keep the best vehicles and send the others for scrap. This
involved the above 977296/7 and 977505-8, these latter four vehicles forming units 053/4 (these having replaced the original 053/4 - 977211/12/07/08)
In short, 977296 ended up with 977506 in 932054 whilst the other vehicles in 050/3/4 were also reshuffled to become a 'new' 932053 and two went for scrap."
977207 from the unit pictured here eventually ended up with 977609 as part of 930014 which later officially became 930101. It is thought never to have been renumbered as such however because it is still stored at Ashford today carrying "014" on the front.
Hope thats all clear!!

As is evident from this photo it seems this unit never carried its allocated 930101. Just visible to the left is 977609 which has been used for various livery tests over the years. If anyone has any more photos of these 4 remaining Sandites at Ashford (or could obtain them) they would be most welcome before they get scrapped!!
Thanks.

The full line-up. With impossible road access (?) and difficult conditions for disposal on site these four have remained here longer than anyone might have anticipated! I'm sure they are up for disposal and people have probably been scratching their heads trying to figure out what to do with them. I'm sure a night-time tow down the line to the OTP depot wouldn't be completely out of the question...?? Again if anyone knows any more I'd be very interested to hear it!

Apparently being removed by road this week with the aid of some extra track panels being laid! Off to Ron Hull's Rotherham for scrap.
