Always good to see pictures of departmentals that were scrapped long ago - this one being taken before my railway interest even started!

This test train originally consisted of two mock Power cars (PC3 - RDB975634 and PC4 - RDB975635) with nothing (0) in between hence the nickname 'POP', it was used from September 1971 as a test bed proving the suspension, tilting and braking systems.
Later the P-O-P train was modified with an APT-P vehicle (Laboratory 8 - 'PILOT' RDB975636) being built and formed between the original P-O-P vehicles, which were re-mounted on revised bogies and given body cladding.
The three vehicle set then performed bogie and ride research work, mainly on the West Coast Main Line.

A rare shot of the end of this vehicle!

Ben, It was undergoing a bogie inspection/repair on the day I saw it, note that the end of sister coach 975636 is jacked up on a trestle to support the body. The vehicles in front of 975635 had to be pulled clear to make space. Very convenient for a photograph!
Anyone got a photo of the "naked" version of 975635 with the spaceframe bodywork?

There are quite a few photos of the 'naked' PC3 and 4 at the main APT-E web site at http://www.apt-e.org/
In those days neither vehicle had a 97 series no., they were just PC3 and PC4, just as the APT-E vehicles were PC1, TC1, TC2 and PC2

Interesting photo here - probably quite a rare sight too...

Lab 3, just one end of which can been seen on the near end of POP-Train, was painted in the RTC Red/Blue scheme at this time, which was in 1971-2. It remained in this scheme until being repainted in the 'Inter City' scheme, as seen in the second photo, sometime in the early 80s.
