Anyone know why this was renumbered 31970 after being 97204? It may be obvious but I can't remember!

i believe it was done as all departmental locos were relisted as capital stock so regained the class number ie 31 but were give the 97X number to show they were operated by the departmental fleet, same as the class 47s

I have always understood that, like the 47's. it was renumbered because the TOPS maintenance system couldn't recognise the different 97xxx locos as Class 31, 47 etc and assign the correct service intervals, so messing up their maintenece programme.

In the context of class 47's, my understanding is that the BR TOPS computer programming could not cope with Departmental locomotives being allocated to revenue earning services.
