After withdrawal this Class 24 (24061) was taken over by the RTC to provide motive power for test trains and was first renumbered RDB968007 (later renumbered to 97201) and named "EXPERIMENT."

97201 was used very regularly on the mainline, quite often double-heading with 97403 (IXION) hauling most test trains between 1975 and 1988 when it was replaced by 97203 which subsequently caught fire and was replaced by 97204, both class 31's.
