I think this van is perhaps still used for storage of cleaning products - the doors on the far side are wide open.
There was also some debate about whether the body actually belongs to the underframe! You can see at the near end how it appears to be chocked with pieces of wood!

The body does belong to this underframe as this is a Shocvan. These were designed for fragile goods so the body moves independantly of the underframe and is retained by large springs.

The body on this van has been cut free from the underframeand is now sitting on the two pieces wood, but they do belong together. This may have been done to remove the van from site as it would need to pass under a low bridge???? The Van is localy known as the s#@t cart, as it was used to collect the rubbish from the signal boxes in Shrewsbury but is now used for storage.

I think we can easily answer this. It is a shoc van and normally the van section would rest directlyon the wagon frame. The "chocks" have raised it up and therefore removed the shock absorbing capacity. When it was built, if hit hard during shunting the van section would slide longitudinally restrained by the rubber springs. That is why the frame is longer to allow for this movement. The wagon above has lost the length of metal sheet that would cover the springs. The 3 vertical white lines were part of the standard livery. I did see a 5 plank open variety at Aviemore c 1978 in use by signalling dept. A preserved 5 plank open vesion can be seen st Bo'ness belonging to the SRPS (photo in pristine livery is on the SRPS reserve collection website)

I didn't notice this van on a recent visit to Shrewsbury. Does anyone know if it has moved or been scrapped?

It was scrapped last week.

Bit of a shame, I would have thought the preservation movement would have found a home for this. Too many useful vehicles get the chop before anyone even finds out, it seems.
