This is one of the two prototype SPA plate wagons, diag SP019A. The underframe differs to the production batches of SPA, being a more standard design similar to those used on OAA and VAA, VBA. 33ft. 6 in. over headstocks with a 20ft. 9 in. wheelbase. Converted 1982.

Thanks for the info Paul & Anon, much appreciated (I noted the underframe's likeness to a VBA/VDA).

The Black paint is light absorbing black, this is to prevent any reflection from the light beam located within.

The suspension looks identical to that below the LEV vehicles and classes 140 and 141 (as first built) railbuses.

    16 March 2008 - Colin Smith

I would like to try and model this strange train, does anybody know what the original wagon was before it was converted into 460000, thanks.

  • DC 460000

    16 March 2008 - 47713

it was not converted from anything. it was built like that. judging by the number, pikes & sea urchins woulda been similar underframes

  • DC 460000

    16 March 2008 - Simon Bendall

Actually, the optical car was built on the underframe of the prototype SPA 460000, which is why its got a number in the revenue wagon series rather than the more logical departmental series (as per the trib van).

  • DC 460000

    23 March 2008 - Colin Smith

Excellent thank you Simon Bendall, just so happens that I have an old hornby one that could be cut up.

  • DC 460000

    17 October 2008 - Dave Smith

Dumb question time - am I right in thinking this optical car wouldn't work properly in daylight? Hence its apparent night-time shifts.......?

  • DC 460000

    20 May 2009 - Harold Nicolson

Did anyone take a picture of the DC 460000 before it was converted to an Optical Car ?

  • DC 460000

About time the NRM did something to represent todays railscene. This should be preserved. With some mock lighting this could be a really interesting interactive exhibit. Or perhaps its just me?

  • 29 January 2015 - Ben Williams

This is being offered for sale through Network Rail. Offers by Feb 2nd...

  • 30 January 2015 - Jon Horswell

This should go to the NRM, but then that is probably asking too much.

  • 19 February 2015 - Ben Williams
