Previous traffic number B 778810. Built Darlington 1958 to lot number 3191, diagram 1/208.
Note the LNER pattern axleboxes, 9" x 4 1/4" size. Most likely fitted from new, due to the use of secondhand wheelsets during the steel shortages of the 1950's.
Small lettering reads "Return to Wadsley Bridge GC". Sheffield Wednesday fans will know this location as being the (now closed) station on the Stocksbridge branch, latterly used as a "Footex" halt for home matches!

Might I suggest that the LNER axleboxes had probably been used to replace roller-bearing axleboxes which the majority of these vehicles had when in main-line use, and which were recycled when the wagons went in to the internal user fleet.

Hi Brian, I'm not so sure. The Palvans built under lot 3191 were numbered B 778751 to 779050 and in David Larkin's book "Wagons of the Middle BR Era", he states that these vans were all built with oil boxes. It was lots 3310 and 3346 that had roller bearings. The clue is the build date of B 778810, 1958 is too early for roller bearings, but lots 3310 and 3346 were built 1960-1.
I must apologise for mis-quoting the diagram number, it's not 1/208, but 1/211.
