The weedkilling train on 9th May 1984 consisted of 80861 975379 977016 977015 and 88001 (977229) hauled by class 31 31441.

The 88001 number is puzzling me here... anyone?

1988 Track Machines by Roger Butcher p74 references the number 88001 as allocated to the ER Weedkilling train. [Presumed in total rather than then any individual vehicle]. 977229 was a Mark One BG 80725

Searching the web for the BR Weedkilling Train revealed the following information from the RCTS.
By 1983 the BR/NER/ER Weedkilling Train was formed of Staff and Dormitory Coach DB975379, Stores Vans DB977015 & DB977016, Spray Coach DE320995 (converted from Gresley Open Brake Third BTO 16551 and five tank wagons.
The two Stores Vans had replaced former BR Fish Vans DB975387 & DB975388 in c1981. In c1984 DE320995 was replaced with a new Spray Coach DB977229. The train was allocated CEPS number 88001 and taken out of use in 1988.
My notes show I noted 88001, it must have been on 977229 as I didn't record that number.
What's confusing is the UK & Ireland Heritage Railways Carriage Survey has 88001 as a later number for DE320995, (now preserved at Colne Valley Railway).
