This was withdrawn from BR NPCCS in 1977 rather than BR Freight stock. As such, if it saw Departmental Service it should have been renumbered into the DB975xxx series. Similar vehicles only acquired a 'D' prefix if they were those that had been transferred from BR NPCCS to BR Freight Stock and withdrawn as the latter but this was not one of those.

Although quoted as being a BTU Tool Van I have no reference to such use. My records suggest that it had been grounded in the late 1970's at what I recorded as Woking YARD (Downside) in 1983. It was joined by BR CCT 94871 in c1981. As far as I'm aware it didn't move until going for preservation at the Dartmoor Railway.

Carrying an 'A' prefix to the 'D' does not tally with its use at Woking which was with the CCE.

Can anyone say for sure this was a BTU Tool Van and if so where?

I would suggest it is not correct to list in the DE series. Perhaps better as a preserved Departmental Grounded body.

Condemned by SR on 04/02/1977. Cut on site at Woking on 04/12/1977 and grounded ever since until moved into preservation. No record of it having been used in any departmental capacity prior to this but presumably used as a store at Woking.

There is an interesting picture on the OTPNET website at https://www.ontrackplant.com/photo/93100-2 which shows this body on the site of what is now Woking OTPD. At some point between 1987 and 1999 it was moved from the Downside to the Upside.

The lack of recent sightings is possibly explained by the body of 87554 having been moved from Okehampton Station to the former MoD sidings about one third of a mile west of the station. See http://www.cs.rhrp.org.uk/se/CarriageInfo.asp?Ref=5143 I would suggest under Notes Okehampton station should now read Former Mod sidings or something similar in order to aid those visting Okehampton. Also, I note there are no sightings suggesting use as a BTU Van, see my earlier comments.
