Is anybody able to shed further light on the BR-style sliding toplights please? Would I be correct in assuming that these were installed following conversion for departmental service? Thanks for any assistance.

I know that I am 3 years too late to answer this question! However some of the Gresley Restaurant cars had Mark 1 style windows fitted when they were rebuilt during the 1950's into cafeteria cars. The early style sliding sidelights used in the 1920's were not very strong and tended to break. Many were replaced in later LNER years with the more robust design that came in about 1931.
And yes some did receive BR windows during convesion into departmental vehicles as well I believe.

I have seen a referance in one of Michael Harris's LNER coach books to a Gresley vehical being fitted with MK1 window frames at stratford in 1961. Just can't find it at present.
