29 January 2005 - Ben
With the closure of Saltley depot this vintage tank probably won't be around for much longer although it was still there today - disconnected from the main yard as it has been for some time I think!

Finally retrieved from the bushes at Saltley its thought this tank is due for scrapping (if not already.) It still has a tree attached by the looks of it...

Looks in pretty good nick considering its ongoing battle with the vegetation. I wonder what delights were to be found lying within!!

It does indeed look to be in reasnoble condition - I wonder if it'll be put up for disposal or if it'll be torched?

I was surprised too when I received this photo! The bodywork doesn't look too bad at all... of course closer inspection may tell otherwise...

Does anyone have a contact 'on site'? This looks far too good to scrap, is there time to mount a preservation bid? I'm interested (subject to gaining necessary permission etc.)

Look's like it's available in kit form now, it wasn't visible yesterday when I passed the ex-L.I.P.

Phil you may be in luck as this has been found alive and well near Worksop - and its even had a coat of paint! More details to follow as I believe the owner may be looking to sell on...

That's excellent news - although I do have rather a lot on my plate at the moment, maybe in a year or six? (I do rather like it though, wouldn't rule it out!). I'd guess this dates from the 20s/30s? (Rivetted tank, cradle mounted.)

Might actually be slightly earlier. The Railway Clearing House had standard designs/features and they did vary slightly over the years. With some exceptions, depending on the liquid carried, the crossed wire hawser method of restraining the "barrel" was stopped by the late 1920's. Ref:Bill Hudson, Private Railway Wagons, Oakwood Press
