Van on the right looks like 041311 ( ex B850489) which sat on a piece of isolated track

Some Conflat wagons such as this one were used as Class 03 match wagons when shunting. Not sure why they needed them but I remember seeing them at other depots such as Bradford Hammerton Street.

Were they used because the 03 alone was too short to trigger track circuits?
(And Paul is correct, 041311 is just peeping in at the right of the photo)

Yep, 041311. The match wagons were apparently used to trigger track circuits but I can't recall if an incident had occurred to bring about their use. The Gateshead O3's appeared to be permanently coupled to theirs, but the Birkenhead ones never used them at all.
