Can anyone tell me what the coach sandwiched between the 2 tractor units is? Is it the usual ultrasonic test train coach (999602)? Did these ever haul anything else, or was it always the ultrasonic test train?

Yes, that's 999602. During Serco days, 977391/2 also occasionally worked with track recording coach 999550 and 975091 Mentor.
