I model the North London Lines with my layout Croxley Wiggenhall Road Depot and have made a model of the Beastie - still requires numbers and window bars

Any more info on this unit would be appreciated I was lucky to see it from a passing train the week before it was scrapped.

Reading the comments above, this unit never visited Croxley Green as it was converted at Strawberry Hill Depot although I have it on good authority it did run down the Shepperton branch under engineers possession to rescue a 465/466 which had failed during commissioning tests, on at least on one occasion.

    Thanks Kev.

I did not realise that the 501 sandite unit lasted as late as 1990

I have a pic of me somewhere pictured next to it at croxley green station back in 1987, on sandite duty it was sadly my 1st & only trip on a 501, a green 16 year old new railwayman.

I lived at Carpenders Park until 1969 and remember as a child travelling on the Class 501's to Watford on a Saturday until 1967 them my dad got a car. Not all bad as we use to drive past Croxley Green Shed every Saturday instead. I think my last trip on a 501 was into Broad Street circa 1982.

I remember all the blue livery variations including the wrap around yellow cab 501. I am created one unit of each livery variation in blue at least for my Croxley WRD layout
