I presume this is some sort of Intertial Naviagation mapping of the Sub-Surface lines?
Any more info, please?

A colleague tells me the unit was hired in by LU for a period when they didn't have their own track recording train available. Nice photo.

I am intrigued to know whether the dmu was running on its diesel engines or was being propelled by an LU battery loco

I'd imagine that it was running under it's own power, but possibly with restrictions on how much fuel it could carry due to fire risks.
When the TRU (yellow sprinter) run's in the Mersey Rail tunnels, this is the protocol.
I'm saying it's running under it's own power, as I don't think LUL had any "Vacuum Braked" loco's (by this time anyway), that could have been used to haul the unit.

Between December 1984 and January 1988, before the LUL Track Recording Vehicle entered service, Lab 5 was used to collect track data for those sections of LUL track over which the vehicle was in gauge.
The unit was self-propelled and driven by a BR driver with a LUL pilot.
