This looks a lot better here than the sorry state it is in now!

Well yes but then again it is under restoration at the MRC so it hopefully will return to this state! Of note on the MRC pictures of this vehicle is that the central headlight seen on this picture has been removed and also the fact that at the time this photo was taken it didnt have the exhaust pipes running up the front as it does now......

    erm...Ben,

the exhaust pipes on all single car DMUs DO run up the cab front, at the van end (i.e. the one you can't see in this phot)

Front-end exhaust pipes do make single car units a hell of a lot less attractive. Riding on single car class 121s on the Bedford-Blechley frequently i used to see a lot of them. I have never seen Iris at bletchley, but have at the MRC. What a state it is now in!

Iris is undergoing full overhaul to as built condition, exhaust have been removed so they can be modified to the original type with the box on top of the cab roof. At the present time roof, sole bars and headstocks have been painted. Window rubber are being replaced. External repaint should be starting soon.

Well I had a ride on Iris at the Midland Railway Centre recently and she performed very well. The standard of restoration on the unit is excellent as with all the work on the Centre's DMU fleet. Maybe sometime in the future we may see Iris in departmental colours again as a tribute to the achievements of the Derby research centre.
