Anyone know what the tank and associated pipes were used for please? The more recent photo of this wagon at Kidderminster shows the tank at least is still present!

Hell of a lot of piping there.

    Perhaps a 'home-made' Drain Train.

What a terrific idea for a modelling project

In the photo of this vehicle preserved at the Severn Valley Railway it quite clearly displays its old number, (ADE118443), neatly stencilled on the side door.

In this older shot of the IU at Immingham it doesn't appear to be carrying any number at all. Even if it was behind the piping you would get a glimpse of it so are we to assume that it carried no ID at all.

Going by the white diagonal lines on the side I think we are looking at the other side to the SVR photo so I suppose there may have been the ADE number on there when this photo was taken or it was added later - who knows!

Not sure where the "ADE" prefix came from for this wagon, its ex number is B 118443 a lot 2380 16T Mineral built by Gloucester C&W in 1951. It was condemned in 1978 as a MCO and transferred to Internal user in 1980. It was never officially recorded as Departmental stock.

This was the depot "Sludge-Gulper" used to clean out drains. The upper "vac bag" was connected to the locomotive vacuum brake system, creating a vacuum in the tank. The longer hose was dropped down the drain, and sucked oil and sludge etc into the tank.
