News - 977860 naming
14 May 2005 - thanks to Mike Cook for this article
A rare event in the world of departmentals this week!A naming ceremony!
On wednesday May 11th 2005 South West Trains' new Route Learning Unit 977860 was named "John Cameron" at Salisbury station.
Mike tells me:
"The speech by John Cameron mentioned that the Route Learning car came about as a result of a suggestion from a driver attending a SPAD workshop, JC pushed SWT for funding as a result. The car is cleared for the whole of the SWT network and he mentioned a figure of 250,000 pounds for the car.
"John is a member of the British Railways Board and is also a non executive director of SWT. He also owns the Union of South Africa steam locomotive. I’ve just read in UK.Railway that he also owns a large number of sheep, hence the constant reference to sheep in the speech made by Graham Eccles."
Look out for it roaming the SWT network now!
