Immingham Railfreight Terminal
Thanks to Vince for the details and photo of this location
Directions - view map From the A180, leave at the Stallingborough Interchange, and take the A1173 towards Immingham/Stallingborough. At the first roundabout you come to, go straight over, past the new fire station, then over another roundabout. Here, you should see an industrial estate. Take the first left (Netherlands Way) and continue down to the main entrance gate and security hut. You can see a lot of stock through the gaps - this is the main cutting area. Taking the second left, Europa Way, leads you to the other end of the terminal, with some sidings full of stock (from where the photo below was taken.) ****UPDATED 20TH SEPTEMBER 2003**** As well as these two vantage points, there is an alternative viewpoint from the rear which gives a good general view of the whole site. Taking the A1173 towards Immingham at the first roundabout you cross over a drainage ditch with banks of earth on either side. It is possible to park here and walk down the left bank of the ditch towards the yard and shed (with large "IRT" painted on the side) to see everything that is present at both ends of the shed. (see link to map.) Access to the site isn't allowed, so you can only get what you can from these public vantage points.
Description Railfreight terminal now used by Easco for disposal of redundant stock.
| Usual vehicles Recently, a vast number of ex-Sandite vehicles have been present for scrapping, along with numerous class 101s, 303s, 305s, and Mk2 coaching stock. Noted on a visit in July 2002 were the four ex-Merseyrail De-Icing units, and an ex-Serco coach (just visible in the picture below at the very end): In September 2003 the site was dominated by class 86 locomotives, 101 DMUs and 310 EMUs although 977912, 977349 and 975547 were still present. And towards the end of 2004 they took delivery of a large number of ex-Southern Region sandite EMUs. Update June 2006 - Most scrapping here has now finished and the only departmental vehicle remaining on site is 977349 which may be saved for preservation.
