This was the last MK1 bodied vehicle built.

No, this was not the last Mk 1 built. It was previously a Class 421 MBSO from unit 1850, built in 1970.

The last Mk 1 bodied vehicles built included 62482 and 62483 (now 999602), built in 1974.

Are the bogies on this vehicle unique? They vaguely resemble b4 bogies but much heavier, almost akin to the bogies under Class 73 diesel-electrics. Can anybody shed any further light on this? I believe it used to be an EMU vehicle of some nature, does this explain the bogies?

Yes Matt, the bogies are heavily modified Mk6 Bogies, similar to bogies that can be found under 4 VEP's and Class 73's, plus loads of other Southern Region EMU's that I can't remember. The Wheelsets still have there driving gears present.

What are the two current coaches that 999606 currently run with. Would I be correct in saying, two Mk2Ds 72630 & 72631??

Ok Thanks for the info SD0853.

Just another couple of questions to add to the list!! (Im modelling 999606 in OO gauge along with MK2D 72630 and 72631 which I am now aware ran with 999606 for a while.

Does anyone know roughly what period this was? (I have a few photos that show around mid '06 to '07

Apart from the obvious ultrasonic equipment and doors/windows etc, does anyone know if anything else was modified when the MBS 62356 was converted into 999606 (mainly looking for underframe detail, motor and anyting else?

    Many thanks for any help

I think Adam G might be wrong about seeing 999606 yesterday. This test train has been through Aynho a couple of times today and it is definitely a plated over mk2 of some kind at that end, possibly 99666?

  • 999606

    17 April 2009 - Michael Tonge

999606 was definitely in Crewe on 17 April.

Came through platform 12 heading south. Consist was 31105,72631,999606,9714.

  • 999606

    16 August 2010 - Robert Burch

The coach was from the 4-CIG/BIG fleet on the SR. The bogies were motorised with 2 x EE507 traction motors each. The other vehicles 999602 & 5 also have the same type of Mk6 SR power bogies since these were from 4 REP units. Certain other SR units featured the Mk6 bogie including the 4 BEP units modified at swindon. Heavy duty and good runners.
