041898
30 April 2005 - Ben Williams
I think this van was at one time heading for the Eden Valley Railway with the vans it used to sit next to for years near the NRM (see photo of 041904 on site) but for some reason never made the trip and remains at York today. I'm not sure who owns it but it has now been shunted into the midst of all the old stored OTP and wagons...

Surrounded by "asbestos removal" signs today so not long for this world...

Apparently this has made it to Warcop now but I'm slightly concerned it has been mistaken for one of the other very similar vans that are there (also from York but several years' earlier.) Any 100% confirmation appreciated!

We still don't really know what has happened to this one either - scrapped? Didn't go to Warcop...
17 November 2012 - Jon Horswell
The most recent issue of Todays Railways UK claims that this has just been scrapped. Could that be the case or are they assuming it's gone because it hasn't been there for yonks!! Can anyone find out for sure when this went.
15 January 2013 - Ben Williams
I'd say this info was questionable but we still have no conclusive disposal details on this one...
5 July 2013 - Peter Hall
Being the person responsible for compiling the 'Coaches' part of Stock Changes in Todays Railways UK I would like to take this opportunity to explain the claim referred to by Jon.
Last Autumn I eventually established beyond doubt that 041898 was no longer at Leeman Road EY or the adjacent sidings. I also established that it had never moved to Warcop and was not now expected to ever arrive. Further enquiries revealed that it had almost certainly been scrapped some time in 2010 as part of a general tidy up of the yard. What was not clear though was whether it had been scrapped on site or removed from site for disposal elsewhere. Certainly some of the later built GRC&W built BG's contained blue asbestos and it was never clear whether this was one of those. If this was the case then disposal would have needed to be undertaken by specialists almost certainly off site.
Consequently I submitted the following for inclusion in Today's Railways:-
Scrapped at/Disposed of for scrap from Leeman Road EY, York: 041898
However what appeared in print was:-
Scrapped at Leeman Road EY, York: 041898
I have yet to get a satisfactory explanation as to why this was edited and no correction has yet been included in the magazine.
