Following recent discussions on DPTgen it seems these wagons were mainly used as either containers for water, diesel sludge, waste oil etc at depots although I'm not sure what it was being used for here at Darlington?

This tender is still in existance in a haulage yard in Doncaster and is visible (to the trained eye) when heading to Sheffield on the left about 3/4 mile from the station. Surprised it's never been preserved.

The yard this tender is in was reported as up for sale in Steam Railway magazine no 409 Dec 2012. According to the report the NBL Preservation Group (who want to build a replica LNER B17 4-6-0) were appealing for funds to buy it. The SR article says it was acquired from Thornaby

Hello All, we have purchased this tender for preservation and will be collecting it from Balby Yard, Doncaster tomorrow (16th April 2013). Any information about the tender's history such as tender number, where built, locos it ran with etc etc would be greatly appreciated please.

Can't add much on this one, except to confirm its previous identity was 108. As 041249 at Darlington DD on 11/5/1974 (Roger Butcher) and there the following month (Mike Kennard). Roger's 1992 IU book has it at Thornaby. I live three miles from the Mizens Railway at Knaphill so a drive past is called for. Keith

This is the tender that sat in the yard near Doncaster Hexthorpe yard for many years.

Why has it ended up here?

It seems this tender was originally moved to Mizens for future use with a non-working steam loco replica but this project was abandoned around 2020. The tender appears to have moved to a private site near Sheffield in late 2021 (after October 2021) where it is to be used in the future with new build steam loco replica 61617 currently under construction there.
13 March 2023 - Brian Cuttell
Correction - The new build steam loco is 61673.

The history of this tender is more complicated than I originally realised. With help from Ken Livermore and the late David Buck I have collected the following information.
041249 was a LNER Group Standard 4200 gallon tender with a flush sided tank and high front end. Its history up to 19/1/1991 is documented in the observations section. At some stage after this date it was sold to Malcom Barlow for preservation and was moved to his road haulage and scrapyard on Balby Road, Doncaster (this is in the Hexthorpe area of Doncaster). Malcom Barlow also purchased, at an unknown date, another LNER Group Standard 4200 gallon tender that had previously been used at Tinsley between at least 1976-1990 as a sludge carrier. The Tinsley tender never had a departmental number and had a tank with flared coping.
By June 2008 the tank from 041249 had been removed from the chassis and the chassis had been transferred to the Scottish Railway Preservation Society at Boness. The tank from 041249 remained at Balby Road and at some date was placed on the chassis of the Tinsley tender though when the Tinsley tender’s original tank was removed (presumed scrapped) and 041249’s tank put on is not known. This combination is recorded in Ken Livermore’s photo on 8/2/2013. The combination of 041249’s tank and the Tinsley tender chassis was sold to NBL Preservation Group and moved to the Mizens Railway near Woking in April 2013 for display with a non working replica of LNER B17 class no 61662. It was then passed to B17 Steam Locomotive Trust, the exact date is not known but it was announced by the Trust in November 2020. The tank and chassis were moved to CTL Seal, Sheffield for storage at an unknown date. The tank of 041249 was found to have the number 4166 chalked on the back when it was collected from Balby Road in April 2013 and this number is now being used by the B17 Steam Locomotive Trust to identify the combination of the Tinsley chassis and 041249 tank. This could be the correct original number but I have no proof yet of how the original number was traced. In the past 108 has been quoted as the original tender number in a Platform 5 Departmental book for 041249 but no Group Standard 4200 gallon tender ever carried this number.
Returning to the chassis of 041249 at Boness, this was sold circa mid 2017 to David Buck the owner of LNER B1 class 4-6-0 no 61306. When 61306 was resold to Locomotive Services of Crewe it is thought that the chassis was included in the sale but at present the exact ownership and location of this chassis is unknown.
I think we need two entries, one for the un numbered Tinsley sludge carrier and another for 041249

I have just had an email from somebody who visits Boness regularly who has confirmed that the chassis of 041249 is still these
